Outcome of the Event
Project Overview
The Smallholder Farmer Resilience through Innovative Financing Project aims toenhance the livelihoods and food security of smallholder farmers by providing essential resources and support. Implemented across 23 villages and 8 Grama Niladhari Divisions (GNDs), the project supports 105 families and approximately 400 individuals, including youth, women-headed families, persons with disabilities, and those affected by kidney disease. This initiative has significantly contributed to improving household income and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Key Achievements
Poultry Farming Support:
·A total of 105 families received 20 chicks each, amounting to 2,100 chicks in total.
·The project facilitated the development of 100 Asola ponds to provide high-nutrition feed
for the chicks.
·Additionally, 30 Black Soldier Fly (BSF) units were introduced to promote sustainable poultry farming, enhancing household nutrition and income opportunities.
Home Garden Enhancement:
·105 families were provided with 101 micro-irrigation systems (3-drum drip irrigation),
covering 21 acres of cultivated land.
·Beneficiaries also received organic liquid fertilizer preparation barrels and essential home
gardening materials, along with necessary training, enabling them to cultivate vegetables and fruits for both household consumption and commercial sale.
Project Impact Economic Benefits:
The project has significantly improved the income levels of participating families. In collaboration with Hirdaramani Apparels, the total revenue generated from vegetables, fruits, and eggs reached Rs. 3,666,540. The project has demonstrated significant
progress in enhancing food security and economic stability for smallholder farmers in Vavuniya. By providing poultry, irrigation systems, and home gardening support, families have improved their income streams and overall resilience. Continued support and scaling up of such initiatives can further strengthen the long-term sustainability of smallholder farming in the region.
