Key Achievements of PALM Foundation, by Program Sector
|
Social Empowerment Program Successes: 499 active small community groups established. 72 Community Based Organizations (CBOs) established in plantation communities (56), war-affected villages (6), and Tsunami-affected villages (10). 2 CBO federations established. Rs.4,436,931 in community-managed revolving funds throughout 72 CBOs. 163 Children clubs formed. 781 volunteer leaders emerged (361 males, 420 females) through the development process. Rs.2,515,020 in loans issued to partner beneficiaries and Rs.1,767,155 recovered so far.
Infrastructure Development Program Successes: Implementation of water and sanitation as integrated activity, affecting 6,957 plantation families and 819 village families. Completed 70 water supply projects for plantation communities. Completed 18 water schemes in the Nuwara Eliya region villages. Provided drinking water facilities to District Hospital Uda Pussellawa. Provided drinking water for common places like crèches, schools, religious places, dispensaries, community halls, etc. Obtained more than 70% contribution from beneficiaries for latrine construction. Motivated target communities to use toilets, especially in the plantations. Completed 2355 toilets for the target communities.
Empowerment Support Education Program (ESEP) Successes: Nutritional awareness and demonstrations given to 2,998 members (878 males and 2120 females). Awareness on sanitation-related hygiene and good health habits given to 2,106 members (853 males and 1253 females). First-aid and occupational health care training given to 558 workers and children (262 males and 296 females). Issues regarding gender equality addressed and awareness created to 2,309 members (1,544 females and 765 males). Awareness on fundamental rights, women's rights, labour rights, child rights created to 687 members (372 women and 315 men). Sinhala and Tamil language classes conducted for 444 children. Health awareness, nutrition and hygienic habits given to 3977 children (2,205 females and 1,772 males). Gender awareness given to 1,315 children (622 females and 693 males). Child rights awareness created to a total of 3,341 (1,197 males and 1,344 females). 522 elders screened in eye clinic and 271 elders provided with spectacles. 1351 females 875 males taken on exposure trips to religious places for socialization and overcome isolation.
Natural Resource Management Program Successes: 95 environmental protection awareness programs conducted for children (1940 males and 2306 females). Training on environmental protection given to small groups and CBO members (2453 males and 2398 females). Training on catchment (water source) protection conducted with 189 water project schemes. Actions taken to prevent the catchments areas from chemical contamination and animal activities. 87 catchment areas protected by CBO members through voluntarily and cooperation with tea estate management. Organic agriculture training for 500 farmers. 116 farmers trained in cattle farming under the PALM target area. Over 90 farmers of the target area trained on nursery
